Breaking Barriers & Opening Doors

What we do

We give out one-off grants to care leavers which will help them to transform their lives.

Grants could be given for a suit for a job interview, a deposit for a first flat, some funds towards driving lessons or a laptop for a college course. Care leavers can apply for funding of up to £1,500, explaining how it will help them reach their aspirations. See our grant giving policy here.

We work with subscriber local authority children’s services departments to make our grants available to their care leavers up to the age of 30. At the moment, these funds are given to care leavers in East and West Sussex, but we have plans to make support available nationwide as more local authorities subscribe to our scheme.

Become a Beyond volunteer

Are you care experienced? Or maybe you just want to help those who have left the care system?

Beyond is a non-profit campaigning organisation set up by care leavers for care leavers. Our policy is to ensure that the voice and experience of care leavers is central to everything we do. Some charities employ professional staff to serve the needs of beneficiaries. But at Beyond, our philosophy is one of putting those with direct experience of growing up in care in the driving seat.

We do this by supporting our volunteers to:

— Help fundraise for the organisation so that we can give grants out to care leavers who really need our support

— Make contact with local businesses to help provide employment and apprenticeship opportunities

— Support local and national campaigns that give a stronger voice for care leavers in public services and policy-making decisions

— After training, volunteers can become a team leader, working with our trustees and grant-giving committee, including liaising with local authority children’s services departments

What skills do I need to volunteer?

— The most important skill is that you have the passion, enthusiasm and commitment to support those who have experienced being in care

— As a voluntary organisation, dependent on donations, we also need people with fundraising and administrative skills, digital marketing experience, PR and project management.

Beyond warmly welcomes those from all walks of life, whether they have formal qualifications or not, including those with disabilities and other under-represented groups.
